What Are the Four Types of Research?

Research involves attempting to answer a question pertinent to a given topic that has baffled individuals for a long time. But this attempt has to follow a structured path in order to be considered research. Research in a given field attempts to describe what a particular object or process is, explain what its characteristics are and how it functions, and predict how the process would occur in the future and shape it would adopt. Research is done by employing both induction and deduction.

Deduction involves inferring from a limited set of observations, a generalized claim. Induction, on the other hand, uses a generalized statement to make specific claims. These concepts are important not only in the research phase but also in the writing phase, where the thesis or essay writer articulates their research. There are four basic types of research that would be the subject of discussion in the subsequent sections.

Descriptive research is concerned with obtaining information about the variables under study instead of explaining their interactions. In other words, it is concerned with answering the “what” of the target sample instead of answering the “why”. There are several characteristics that any descriptive research has. Firstly, descriptive research gathers quantitative information about the subject it is studying which is then used in the analysis. Secondly, the variables under study are not influenced by the research methods in any way. The only function of descriptive research is to observe these variables in work without causing them any disturbance. Thirdly, the different samples within the same group are studied in descriptive research. And lastly, the data is only a preliminary step that is part of a bigger research process.

The data serve as the starting point to perform analysis and to find out meaningful results from it. There are three different methods that can be used to conduct descriptive research. First is a survey that poses relevant questions to the sample populations through questionnaires. The second is observation, which includes measuring the data on a given subject for an extended period of time. The third is a case study, which measures the characteristics of a given population in a given setting. If I were having difficulty in following these instructions, I could ask a professional researcher and writer to Write my essay, so that I can attain quality results from my research.

Correlational research involves finding the relation between two variables given the data available. This type of research does not involve experimentation and works with the data provided. It looks back on the research that generated the data and strives to produce meaningful results from it. An example of correlations research would be finding the relationship between temperature changes during the summer and the number of ice-cream sales, given that data is provided on both of these variables.

This relationship could either be positive – that is, one variable increases with the increase in other variables – or negative – that is, one variable decreases with the increase in other variables or vice versa. Moreover, it is also possible that two given variables have no correlation between them. Another example of a correlational example in the domain of market research could be determining whether or not introducing new and better services affects the retention rates of customers. The correlational research is often performed on multiple variables, that is a target variable is identified and the effect of changing other various variables on the target variable is identified. Oftentimes, it becomes hard to pay attention to these details.

The third type of research is quasi-experimental research. Much like experimental research, quasi-experimental research aims to establish a cause-and-effect relationship between two variables. But, unlike experimental research, the groups formed from the sample population are not randomly assigned for experimentation. There are certain situations where performing experimental research would be considered unethical or problematic, and in those situations, quasi-experimental research comes in handy.

Consider for example the situation where a new drug is being tested for its efficacy. You might be prohibited to perform true experimentation by the seniors for ethical reasons, and so you cannot randomly assign the drug to the target patient groups. In these situations, you would need to perform quasi-experimental research where you would use pre-defined groups to test out the drug. This type of research could have certain drawbacks as you are not able to keep in check other factors that might influence the results. In such situations, a custom essay writing service can help you bring out quality research with quality writing.

The fourth type of research is experimental research. Experimental research involves manipulating an independent variable to measure its effects on the dependent variable. The dependent variable is used to generate a hypothesis that is tested experimentally in a controlled environment. The first step in experimental research is to collect data using experimentation. This data is then manipulated using statistical techniques to test out the hypothesis.

There are several benefits associated with conducting experimental research. As researchers are performing experiments, they are more in control of their target variables, which they can manipulate in various ways to tackle the given question from multiple angles. In addition to this, the results obtained from experimental research are specific and unambiguous, which helps verify or reject the given hypothesis. The data you attain and the conclusion you reach also help future researchers to build on prior information. Thus, it helps research on a given topic to improve and move further.
